"Make One, Take One" Symposium Discussion

Thank you to Nick Ruth for inviting me to be a participant in this discussion regarding print trades. You can watch the archived YouTube video HERE.

This symposium-style event seeks to draw out and amplify the practice of the printmaking portfolio, underscoring its function as a means for creating cultural exchange, artistic support networks, and innovation in printmaking. There will be five short illustrated presentations, each discussing a portfolio or portfolio project, its concept and structure, and its contribution to the printmaking community. Speakers include:

Karen Kunc, Constellation Studios
Rajesh Pullarwar, International Print Exchange Programme, India
Gregory Santos, Mixed Grit
Mizin Shin, Mirabo Press
Tanekeya Word, Black Women of Print (BWoP)

Make One, Take One is presented along with the exhibition A Voice to a Voice. It is sponsored by The Print Club of RochesterMirabo Press, and 'A Voice to a Voice' artist Nick Ruth.

Impressed: Upside Down

It was an honor and privilege to be the juror for the exhibit Impressed: Upside Down, the fourth in a series of national juried printmaking exhibitions in the Art Gym Gallery. As part of the Month of Printmaking this exhibit brings together prints from 30 artists across the country. The work is tied together by the strange and often surreal idea of everything being connected. Plants, animals, the earth, and humankind all began at the same place. Through change and choices, evolution and environment, we have arrived where we are today.

Printmaking: Creativity and Methodology

I was visited by a group of students from University of Colorado/Boulder, specifically the Printmaking: Creativity and Methodology class taught by Matt Christie.

We spent two hours looking at my work, talking printmaking and collaboration, and also opening up my collection of Printer’s Proofs.

From the Archives

I discovered this forgotten lithograph of mine while organizing prints in a flat file. What a joy to see it again! This six color, plate lithograph is from a print trade I participated in with my fellow printers at the Tamarind Institute in 2007. Two flats, three layers of spray paint, and one toner wash. I’ve no memory if the toner was suspended in alcohol or water.

Creatives At Roundish Tables (C.A.R.T.)

I was asked to be the guest facilitator of this months Creatives At Roundish Tables discussion. The topic I chose to present was β€œFalling on the Social Sword - How should you genuinely tackle self-promotion in a vast, crowded, competitive, social media market without giving away everything for free?”

Thank you to all the participants who wanted to dive in and tackle the nitty-gritty of social media!

Kristin Sarette

It’s not every day your gym workout is altered because Kristin Sarette is in town for literally one day and wants to meet up and visit the Art Gym print shop. But when that happens, and your gym is only two blocks away, you rush to finish your superset of dumbbell snatch + mountain climbers and head over to the print shop ASAP on a Sunday afternoon. Then you hover near a beautiful Fuchs & Lang litho press for two hours while talking all things print.

Thank you Kristin for making the time to visit today!

Big Ink at Red Delicious Press

I was fortunate to be one of eight artists selected to take part in Big Ink, hosted by Red Delicious Press in Aurora, Co.

I haven’t carved a woodcut in more than 15 years and yet I took on the challenge of carving a 40x40 inch block of cherry veneer plywood for this event. This was a remarkable event and I recommend everyone apply to take part if Big Ink comes to a town near you.

You can purchase my print, Mors Omnia Solvit, directly from Big Ink at this link. $1400.

In Cahoots Residency

Finishing up my first artist residency and it’s been a remarkable experience. I’ve spent my entire career working in and for print shops and while I’ve always maintained a studio practice utilizing those shops it’s near impossible to wear multiple hats at the same time. It’s extremely difficult to play where you work so this has been a remarkably joyful week. Spending these days printing in a studio where I have no responsible to clean, repair, build, teach, or manage. Simply create. In Cahoots Press and Residency - what a beautiful place and experience!
