The 11th President of the United States, James Knox Polk, was a supporter of Manifest Destiny. On May 13, 1846, the U.S. Congress voted to declare war on Mexico in a dispute over Texas. On February 2, 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (officially titled the "Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits and Settlement between the United States of America and the Mexican Republic") was signed putting an end to the Mexican-American War. The land acquired in the treaty added 525,000 square miles to the United States territory, including parts of seven present-day states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
On Jul 10, 2014, Donald Trump, now the 45th President of the United States, referred to Mexico as our enemy.
