STATEMENT

"My imagery is an exploration of emotional, intimate, physical relationships as well as elemental interrelationships. Bodies in motion are deconstructed to reveal minimal forms interacting and interweaving. These figures are stripped of all identifying markers allowing the composition, color combinations and mark-making gestures to describe narratives that are both active and reactive. These vignettes reveal fundamental communications and temperaments found within familiar relationships. This ongoing body of work entitled Movements, explores and portrays simplified and abstracted figurative movements, capturing the complex aspects of personality, mood, and the vibrancy of human gesture. Each piece becomes its own visual account of poetic movement."

Gregory's artwork has recently been influenced by Joseph Albers, Jennifer Bartlett, Donald Judd, Frank StellaKenneth NolandEllsworth Kelly and Peter Halley

A new body of work, with two working titles: Fatherly Advice and Paternity Test, is in it’s beginning stages. These new pieces deal with the artist's relationship with his father who died of complications from both lung and bone cancer in 1993, when Gregory was thirteen years old.

"Fatherly Advice is my interpretation of his artwork from the late 1960’s. Copying his compositions while altering the materials and colors brings new meaning and emotion to his imagery and revitalizes it in a contemporary aesthetic. Paternity Test uses my mark making techniques and color palettes to create imagery similar in style yet different in composition from my father’s work. The imagery of Paternity Test is directly informed and influenced by the original compositions that make up Fatherly Advice. Both series are an artistic dialog I’m having with my father, more than 20 years after our final conversation."
